A 10-Point Plan for (Without Being Overwhelmed)

A Guide to Stonemasonry

In stonemasonry, the mason shapes an irregular piece of rock into an accurate structure. Levels, gauge lines and plumb bob are used by stonemasons in order to set vertical and horizontal alignments of the structure they are building. They also layout foundations and wall patterns with the use of rules, staked lines, and a straight edge. Other tools that stonemasons use are chisel, hammers, and power grinder in order to make rough or defective spots smooth and to repair cracked or chipped stone, they use a blowtorch.

When building monuments, the stonemasons first need to remove from the truck bed, the parts of the monument, then guide it to the foundation using hoist, cranes, or skids. Parts of the structure are made by filling molds with a mixture composed of stone.

Stonemasons can be classified into many types.

A quarryman extracts stone from a quarry when he splits sheets of rocks down their vein.

The work of a sawyer mason is to take these chunks of rock and shape them using diamond-tipped saws to the required size and shape.

A banker mason further shapes the rock into the required size and shape of the building design. Banker masons ensure that the orientation of the shaped stone in the building is the same as it was oriented in the ground.

The artistic ability of the carver mason is used to create designs and patterns in or from the stone-like figures, animals, or different designs.

The specialization of fixer masons is in fixing stone permanently onto building structure using different forms of epoxy resins and cement. In a fixer mason’s job, you are required to work at high altitudes and it requires precise tolerances and so it is highly dangerous and you should be highly skilled as well. Your also use a tackle lift system to manipulate very heavy pieces of stone.

If you need to carve gravestones, statues, or memorials, then you need the services of a memorial mason.

The workplace of a stonemason is generally outdoors. With the hazardous work of a stonemason the needs to wear a hardhat and exercise extreme caution. In a stonemason’s work, it requires much physical effort and during bad weather, since they work outdoors, contracts are less frequent. But today, stonemasons can work outside whatever the weather condition is because of various advancements in masonry technology.

Because you need to climb scaffolding, use hammers and chisels, and spend the day bending, kneeling, and carrying heavy loads through tough terrain, then we can consider the work of a stonemason to be hard physical labor. Often, stonemasons are contracted privately and are given a time schedule to follow. Overtime and weekend work are sometimes necessary to be able to meet deadlines.
