Barb Matz

Bio:
Barb Matz is a visual artist and a middle school art teacher in Hastings,
Minnesota. Her main interest is color, and it takes many forms: acrylics,
pastels, computer printing, and cross stitch and pastel.
Those who have seen this series of prairie cross stitch and pastel comment
that they've not seen such a combination before. Neither has Barb, who
becomes bored with one media on a flat surface. So she tries many things,
including wildly painted mannequins, illustrating, printing, and binding
a children's book, and combining media.
The collages were created to show both the grandiosity and the miniature
wonder of the prairies. If you look closely, you will notice that the
prairie collages are composed of tiny marks: the cross stitch of the thread,
and the dashes of pastel. The tiny marks are meant to echo the small and
diverse worlds found in the prairies.
In this world of constant in-our-face stimulation and noise, it is easy
to miss the complex beauty of our native land. Closer examination reveals
a quiet beauty and rich life all around us, both within ourselves and
in these vast fields.
