Kyle Hermanson

Bio:
Kyle Hermanson is a professional artist and published illustrator who in recent years turned his talents to acrylic and glass painting in contemporary illustrative styles. He is the recipient of many awards, including three-time winner, best-in-state in the Aeronautics Art Competition of Minnesota.

Kyle is a native of Montevideo, MN. After two years at the Montevideo high school, he transferred to the Perpich Center for Arts Education, located in Golden Valley, MN, where he graduated with honors. He has studied art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, WI, and recently graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

This exhibit takes a dramatic new look at the lakes we enjoy in Minnesota, or rather what lies beneath the calm and tranquil surface. It concentrates on the unique environment that makes Minnesota's underwater habitats unlike those found anywhere else. Kyle introduces us to a world that is old, dark and twisted, creating a dynamic contrast to the somewhat majestic and menacing depictions of local fish species. This series implies a narrative, making the viewer part of the scene and evokes feelings of wonder and fear. With the shifting movement of the light, encompassing arms of decaying branches and fallen trees, Kyle moves us through this unfamiliar world with unrest. This exhibit introduces us to fish that were previously regarded as passive and disengaged, but through these paintings we see monsters cloaked in darkness, travelling through the murky depths.

Working in several mediums ranging from sculpting lard to creating oil relief paintings, Kyle believes that by not focusing in on one particular medium, his ability to express his ideas through art increases. His subjects are also of a wide range. He has created series of works capturing the nostalgia of 1950s classic automobiles, tongue and cheek commentary on the wine crowd, realistic depictions of figures and cityscapes, and the abstract themes of time, energy, and music - specifically jazz. Although Kyle has worked in a multitude of mediums, he prefers working with acrylics over any other medium due to their versatility and color quality.

Kyle's work has been exhibited in these Metro locations: Patrick's Cabaret, the Ford Center Gallery, NSP/Excel Energy corporate offices, University of Minnesota - McNamarara Alumni Center, Perpich Center for Arts Education Gallery, The Melting Pot Gallery, and the Minnesota State Capitol Building. Kyle's work is also on continuous display at the Stable Art Gallery at Madden's Resort on Gull Lake near Brainerd, Minnesota, and the Fireside Gallery of Montevideo, Minnesota. He has also shown his work at the Layton Gallery of Art, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as several other locations in the Milwaukee area.
